Watching ‘Cowspiracy’ made me go vegan. I watched it and stopped drinking milk the exact same day. So when I read that the makers of ‘Cowspiracy’ produced another documentary about veganism, I knew that I had to watch it.
Where ‘Cowspiracy’ is focussing on the environmental impact of the meat and dairy industry, ‘What the Health’ is focussing entirely on the health aspects. Why do leading health organizations promote eating steak as part of an healthy diet, even though research shows that eating red meat is actually a bad for people with heart disease or cancer? Why does the pink ribbon organization cooperate with a dairy company, even though there is research proving a clear link between consuming dairy and breast cancer?
My personal opinion? The documentary definitely offers food for thought and helps with making me more critical and cautious in terms of the general nutritional guidelines and recommendations. Research conducted and recommendations made by organizations that are sponsored by big cooperations, interested in obtaining particular outcomes, should always be looked at with caution.
Besides that, I do believe that consuming large amounts of animal protein is not good for people, and eating a varied whole food plant based diet can make a big difference in people’s health. Disclaimer: I do not believe that a plant based diet is a cure for everything, and in many cases general medicine is still needed to cure people or alleviate symptoms.
Since I am following a vegan diet already, I will not change any eating habits after watching the documentary. Where as I originally started eating a vegan diet mostly because of environmental reasons ‘What the Health’ does give an extra push of confidence that a plant based vegan diet is actually the best for me, also from a health standpoint.
